Never Scared Fat

To avoid obesity, most people do not mengonsumsi foods that contain fat. In fact, excessive antilemak attitude is not recommended. Because the fat still have a function for the body.

Teacher of Food Science and Nutrition Department of Nutrition and Community Family Resource Bogor Agriculture Institute (IPB) Prof Dr Ali said Ms Khomsan, obesity is dipacu by some of those things because the genetic factors or mengonsumsi many foods that contain calories and fat. And, it must be a concern.

"Now people are afraid of fat because it is considered to be something that cause the disease. We can not be reduced to 0% fat. So that is good may reduce, but not to be taboo," a lecturer who issued a book titled Healthy That Easy in 2008 this .

Ali still proceed, fat is actually good for health for melarutkan vitamins A, D, E, and K. Any food that we certainly contain fat consumption. So we required a smart-smart in choosing food. For example, Ali said, in mengonsumsi beef (steak), select the type of beef steak tenderloin. For, very minimalist lemaknya womb.

"Material-food derived from animal usually contain lots of fat. You can not avoid, but choose the better," sarannya.

Nutrition consultant's Hospital Mother and Child in Ampera, Kemang, Putri Gita Menur SKM, said one of the functions of fat for a number of energy supply, while one gram of fat contains 9 calories, while 1 gram carbohydrate contains only 4 calories.

Daughter to continue, the good fat is required, even it is important for the structure and function of every cell in the human body. Fat is the "fuel" that gives you two times more energy than many other types of food. Fat is stored in the body, acting as energy storage bank.

Fat is the obstacle that protects you from the cold merusak.Lemak which also cover the body's nerve-nerve. A good type of fat that is called HDL cholesterol can help eliminate the damage and do not want it from the duct-vein.

Vitamin A, D, E, and K is the type of vitamins that dissolves in fat and stored in networks of fat. So a certain amount of body fat have any benefits. Fat-fat that is not desired materials and oily saturated in a lot of meat, processed animal and dairy, including eggs, cheese, milk, and lard.

Nuts and seeds also contain fat, but that's kind of good. Cholesterol is a type of fat that requires the setting of carefully in the body.

"Cholesterol is in animals, but not in vegetable fat. Most of the fat that you eat every day does not appear. Because it's mixed in gorengan and cuisine. Related between fat food and health is how much the actual amount of fat consumed," said daughter.

The ideal is to eat fat in accordance with the contents found in natural seed corn, vegetables, nuts, and grains (the last two with the limited amount).

Introduced first by Hitoshi Watanabe of Tokyo, Japan, the diet method is directly attributed to popular stories that spread from mouth to mouth, a publication on the internet, television, magazine articles and books written Watanabe.

In principle, this diet is very simple. During breakfast, we only need to consume bananas and drinking warm water. In the afternoon and evening, we can eat anything, it may ngemil. Pantangannya only one, do not eat at eight o'clock on the night and avoid ice cream, processed milk products, alcohol, or dessert after dinner. Sweet snack can disantap but only in the daytime.

What makes this method is very popular diet is not the incorporation of elements of sports. Actors diet is recommended only for sport, and when it would only be allowed to do sports that do not create stress. Put relaxed.

Accelerating digestion
Quite a lot of people who recognize the efficacy of this method of diet, one of the original Japanese opera singers, Kumiko Mori, who admitted to body weight decreased 6.7 kg after applying the diet of bananas this in a short time.

There are many versions of trying to explain why the banana diet can reduce body weight. One theory, which states that bananas contain enzymes that can accelerate the process of digestion and defecation, which result in a decrease in body weight.

It is true that fibrous foods, including bananas, can make the digestive system work more quickly and all the food is not absorbed all the calories. But experts think the decreasing calories will not be much effect on body weight decrease.

Meanwhile, another theory states the cause is a starchy, which makes the stomach always feels satisfied and increase fat burning. Oat flour is naturally we can find in the food berkarbohidrat such as green bananas, potatoes, rice seeds, and bean, but only if we eat in the cold. Oat flour will make digestion occurs in the small intestine and large intestine to direct.

Still controversy
Although popular, many experts doubted the ability of this diet. Bananas and other fruits are often obliged to become a meal for people who want to slim. But, the actual content of bananas have no specific effective for weight loss.

In addition, the food is not abstain is not a suitable business in the lower body weight. Pelangsingan business in order to succeed, we must be physically active and to control calories. And to remain healthy, certainly we should consume healthy food. Experts agree there is no one food that can also burn fat. The fastest way to losing weight

For a diet to produce the results you want that we must stick to it. This is a logical statement, but not always so easy to do because of all the distractions that seem to throw us off the track.

There are literally hundreds of safe, healthy and effective diet plans in the market today and most of them explain how to get from where you are now to where you want to be. In other words, if you follow the plan lose weight and reach your goal.

The problem is that this requires patience and the process can achieve ... so boring, and there is also the risk of hitting a pothole along the road where the scale appears to be blocked and although you are following the diet, the results are not shown. This is the time that they become vulnerable to distraction.

Distractions lead us out of our way and delay our progress and, if you allow them to carry us too far way that may prevent us from achieving our goal at all.

Let's say you decide to lose 40 pounds. The quickest and most efficient method to accomplish this would be to control their calorie intake and eat whole grains, lean protein, healthy fats and fruits and vegetables. You also want to eliminate refined carbohydrates and add exercise to your daily routine. This is a very simple and straightforward but, unfortunately, we often have distracted and of course the passage. Common distractions include everything from tempting foods, stressful day, emotional eating, and the temptation of "quick fix".

All these things steal our attention and make our last trip longer than it should be.

Now we can go back and take a reality here - everyone has "one of those days" or a time that the easing in your diet seems appropriate - I'm not saying that the only way is perfection. What I am saying is that if you have been bothered by the extra weight for a long time, then you can consciously change their situation by limiting the things you throw away of course.

The fastest way between where you are and where you want to be is a straight line. The more we are able to reduce the distractions and stick to its plan of diet fastest to reach his goal.

What happens when you get very little protein in their diet

The proteins are composed of long chain of amino acids as the forms. Amino acids are basic and fundamental to life. As a chemical compound is amine and carbonyl functional groups. To put it simply, that are made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen and in some rare cases, sulfur. These four or five building materials themselves in the various chain-like structures and how different types of proteins. Protein is the life line of human health.

Human cells, muscle tissue, and organs of the body are made up of proteins. Long chains of amino acids are structured to do different kinds of proteins. There are 22 kinds of amino acids and the human body needs them to be healthy.

Different types of proteins in our bodies running different body functions. Our body of the force, its flexibility and resilience are attended by a protein called collagen, and our hair and skin are composed of the same protein.

The proteins that we consume through food are divided into amino acids in the process of digestion and absorption by the body only to be rebuilt in different types of proteins that are the condition of the body. There are twenty two types of essential amino acids for the human body. And in that 14 are produced by the body and the remaining 8 were obtained in spite of food.

Complete and incomplete Proteins

A protein that can be obtained through a source of food as a meat or dairy products is called a complete protein. A complete protein is produced in general, although the meat, dairy products, eggs, fish and poultry. Vegetables, fruits and nuts do not contain all the essential proteins in a food and what is termed as incomplete.

Importance of Protein

For growth, maintenance and repair of body cells, for the health of muscles, tissues, organs and functions in the body such as metabolism, digestion, transport of nutrients and oxygen through the blood circulation, the Proteins are essential.

Apart from that it is more important for the production of antibodies, or in other words, the antibodies are few soldiers who fight any infection that invades the body and combat disease and makes us healthy. The health of the skin and hair shining in which we are proud to be a protein.

Too little protein through ill health

Like our great mothers often say, 'nothing too much or too little is harmful "is absolute truth in the case of proteins. Excessive protein intake leads to many physical complications like awkward little intake of protein may give rise to complications.

Protein is needed to repair and create new cells, tissues, hormones, enzymes and muscles and lack of protein might undermine those important functions of the body leads to serious situations. Many foods contain proteins that provide other vitamins and minerals such as iron, a lack of which creates an eternal tiredness and fatigue. The person who lacks iron feels weak and becomes apathetic, lack of energy.

Physical activities consume daily protein, so it is essential to provide regular supply of protein in the body daily. And too little protein can cause serious skin diseases and make you look pale and lusterless.

Children need a large number of proteins that are at the stage of growth and inadequate protein in children makes its growth a lot.

During a period of time if your body does not get enough protein through food, which begins breaking the muscles that contain large amounts of protein to meet their need. This means the erosion of the muscles and generally known as muscular atrophy. And long this situation leads to a vicious cycle of malnutrition at the time that the body receives no other source of energy, muscles and organs of the body a new breakdown of energy. The digestive system suffers the loss of cells lining which is important for the absorption of nutrients from digested food. Thus, a vicious cycle of poor diet and lack of absorption of nutrients from foods lead to severe loss of body.

Top 10 Reasons Why you should NOT "go" on a Diet

The only thing growing faster than the $65 billion diet industry is the American waistline. If one of your New Years resolutions was to Go on a Diet, the only place I guarantee you will go....is up in weight.

It's a Fact - Diets will only make you fatter.

When it comes to the latest in Diet fads, we are quite gullible and easily tempted by a Diet's empty promised. Reason being....the diet industry KNOWS we are in search of the "quick fix" and will only play with our emotions - our desperation for the quickest way to relieve looking and feeling fat.

Diets are nothing more than Temporary Solutions with many lingering, negative side effects.

Here are the Top 10 Reasons Why you should NOT "go" on a Diet

1. Diets do NOT work.

Diets have a 99% Failure Rate. Have you noticed a pattern yet? Lose weight....quickly regain it? Over time, studies show if you diet you are more likely to be overweight than people who eat normally and make small gradual changes to their lifestyle. No, the Law of Averages does not apply to this faulty system.

2. Dieting can be Dangerous.

Any time you severely restrict the amount or types of foods you eat you put your health and life at risk. Dieting has been related to injuries and sudden deaths from electrolyte imbalance, malnutrition, and heart arrhythmia's. Weight cycling, or yo-yo-ing weight, is associated with higher death rates - especially if some type of pills are being used. At no point should you ever place weight loss above your health.

3. Dieting Destroys your Metabolism.

Diets will cause your weight to quickly cycle up and down. Sure, you may lose weight quickly because you are simply not eating enough. In the initial stages, the first seven to nine pounds lost are water, presenting a real danger of dehydration and mineral deficiencies. Even more terrifying ins the break down of lean muscle due to inefficient nutrients and calories. If you are losing more than 3-4 pounds a week, you can be sure this is what is happening - very little fat is lost this state.

Now, any muscle loss will cause your metabolism slow to a crawl. The cumulative effect takes place for you cannot survive very long on very low calories (1200 or less) and you will eventually eat more - on top of a slower metabolism. All those excess calories will be stored as fat - causing rapid weight gain.

4. Dieting is Exhausting.

Diets are just reduced calorie Fads disguised by a clever gimmick. "Lose weight while you sleep" "Eat all you want and still lose weight" Not eating enough or cutting out certain food groups means your body may not be getting the energy it needs, or may lack certain nutrients. You will feel exhausted, light headed and experience some not-so-fun mood swings.

5. Dieting is Disruptive.

Dieting negatively affects your normal eating patterns. Diets can lead to binge eating, overeating and chaotic eating. When you diet, it is common to override your internal signals telling you to eat. You end up trying to use willpower or resist hunger signals and may even go as far as taking appetite suppressants. This results in being unable to know when you really are hungry or wore....when you're full.

6. Dieting can lead to eating disorders.

Experts state that the high rates of eating disorders in the U.S. are due in part to people dieting, losing weight, rebounding, and becoming chronic dieters.

7. Dieting Causes Food Obsessions.

If you spend a large amount of time and energy depriving yourself of food or certain types of food - you will spend more time thinking about food and become obsessed attempts to control your weight by what you choose to eat or not eat. How long do you want to live like this?

8. Dieting Diminishes Women.

There is way too much attention focused on our appearance and an arbitrary number on the scale. In the midst of this focus - we end up avoiding what really matters to us - our dreams and ambitions. Even worse, it erodes our confidence and self-respect.

9. Dieting Intensifies Negativity.

If you diet, you are more judgmental and critical of yourself and others. Once again, wasted time and energy.

10. Diets Put Your Life on Hold.

Does this sound familiar...."I'll be happy when I weigh "x pounds." Guess what, the issues in your life are not related to your weight. Take responsibility and take back control of your life. Decide to be happy now and do what it takes to live a lifestyle that reflects your priorities.

So this year resolve to NOT go on a Diet. Set Yourself Free from this miserable, guaranteed to fail weight loss cycle. Do NOT let the diet industry make money by taking advantage of you. It is time to stand up for yourself and take control.

Why Your Diet May Not Be As Rich In Iodine As You Assume

The trace mineral iodine is well known for its crucial role in enabling the body's manufacture of vital thyroid hormones, but it is also important for the health of the immune system and for optimal brain function. It is widely believed by many authorities that iodine deficiency should never be seen in the affluent West, although this problem affects millions throughout the developed world.

Some nutritionists argue, however, that this conventional view is too optimistic, because the content of all minerals in foods is heavily dependent on the mineral content of the soil from which those foods are derived. The assumption must therefore be that the continuing de-mineralisation of farm soils has led to a reduction in the amount of dietary iodine commonly consumed.

Fish and other seafood, however, remain a relatively rich source because these ocean creatures concentrate the sea's iodine in their flesh. Though not commonly eaten in the West, seaweed, or kelp, is also an excellent source of iodine for this reason, and is readily available in the form of a dietary supplements. Dairy products and certain meats may also be a good source, particularly where iodine is routinely added to farm animal feed. But in countries, including most of Western Europe, where animals are grazing fields growing on iodine depleted soils, levels are likely to be much lower.

So even in the West, those not including fish or seafood in their diets, and not using iodised or sea salt, may be at real risk of deficiency. In an effort to compensate for low levels of dietary iodine, the mineral has been routinely added to ordinary table salt in the US for many years. But the practice is not as common in the UK and other European countries, where specially iodised or natural "sea-salt" has been marketed more as a luxury alternative. The problem of insufficient dietary iodine has been compounded on both sides of the Atlantic, however, by increasing concern about the possible adverse health consequences, particularly high blood pressure, of excessive salt intake. Many nutritionists, however, regard these fears as exaggerated, and believe that any such potential problems are far less serious than the consequences of an insufficiency of iodine, and may be easily resolved by the use of the low sodium salt alternatives available.

Iodine, however, cannot in any case be regarded as a luxury. Its essential function lies in the production of the vital thyroid hormones; thyroxine, sometimes known as T4, and tri-iodothyronine, or T3. And as is well known, these hormones are crucially important in ensuring a healthy metabolic rate and the release of energy from food; so an underactive thyroid gland is commonly the villain in cases of excessive weight gain, particularly where this of sudden onset, and in cases of difficulty in losing weight even when following a sensible reducing programme. A healthy thyroid gland is also crucial for the optimal functioning of the immune system.

But perhaps even more importantly, iodine deficiency is also known as a major cause of avoidable brain damage; a problem which the World Health Organisation has estimated to affect an astonishing 50 million people worldwide. Sadly, many of these cases occur in children whose mothers were iodine deficient in pregnancy, resulting in a condition of severely retarded brain development known as congenital hypothyroidism, or "cretinism". Even where such catastrophic consequences are avoided, iodine deficiency in childhood may also have serious effects on the developing brain, leading to low energy and motivation for learning, and measurable impairment of IQ scores.

Since 2001 the Food and Nutrition Board of the US Institute of Medicine (FNB) has prescribed a Recommended Dietary Allowance for iodine of 150 mcg for all individuals over 14, rising to 220 mcg for pregnant women and 290 mcg for those breastfeeding. Somewhat confusingly, however, an excessive consumption of iodine is also associated with a malfunctioning or enlargement of the thyroid gland, as well as mouth ulcers, headaches and gastric upsets, and the FNB therefore advises an upper safe limit for daily iodine consumption of 1,100 mcg for adults. Most people eating a conventional Western diet are unlikely to exceed this level.

With the possible exception of pregnant and breastfeeding women, people in the West who use liberal quantities of iodised salt as a regular seasoning are unlikely to need further supplements. But many commercial multi-mineral preparations contain iodine in reasonable quantities, usually in the form of potassium iodide, and whilst not perhaps strictly necessary, such supplementary doses will do no harm and may be regarded as a useful insurance policy given that, like all minerals needed by the body, iodine functions best in the presence of adequate supplies of all the others. And it should be particularly noted in this context that the effects of any deficiency of iodine may be intensified by any deficiency of selenium, iron or vitamin A.

Introduction to Atkins Diet

You always thought that to lose weight and feel good you have to adopt a low-fat diet? If so, the principles and approach of the Dr.Atkin’s New Diet Revolution, Revised might just not sound right for you. Since Dr. Atkins published his book, new scientific researches show that a controlled carbohydrate nutritional approach is better for you-and for your body-than a lowfat, high-carbohydrate nutritional approach.

Many people think that only one thing matters: how many calories you take in and use up. It’s not that simple. When you follow a controlled carbohydrate approach, you get what Dr. Atkins calls a “metabolic advantage”. When you control carbohydrate consumption sufficiently, your body will switch from burning glucose derived from carbohydrate to burning primarily fat for energy. The metabolic advantage is that burning fat takes more energy so you expend more calories. And if you eat fewer calories-as many Atkins people do because their appetite is usually diminished-you’ll likely lose weight even faster. So it’s not that calories don’t count, it’s just that you will burn more of them, with less hunger, when your body is operating on a fat-based metabolism.

According to Dr. Atkins, there are 3 groups of patients that fit into the Atkins Diet profile. If your answer is “yes” to most of the questions in one category, then Atkins is the right diet for you.

Singles, Exercise and Diet(share?)

Pot luck dinner anyone? Churches seem to love those fat laden affairs, and Christian singles are apparently leading the way to the buffet. A recent UK survey on the habits of singles found that singles of all ages had unhealthier diets than married folks. For example:

* More than two times as many single people ate fried food and fast food (3x a week) compared to those married. That’s a lot of Burger King!
* Only 20% of single men and women ate the recommended 5 daily servings of fruits and veggies, compared to 34% for married couples.

The only good news for singles is that they were more likely to excercise than their married counterparts. I suppose we have to work off all that artery clogging junk food!

I found the above news on diet quite surprising. After all, obesity is usually counter-productive to finding a girlfriend or boyfriend. Yet, there are many reasons why singles may have poorer diets than married people. Some singles report that they would rather not cook if they are doing it for themselves. Others report that eating comfort foods (like French Fries) helps them deal with stress and loneliness. Finally, still other singles stated they’re on the run so often, they simply have no time to prepare a healthy meal.

In God’s Word, it’s clear that God wants His children to honor Him with their bodies. Would you agree that this not only means to stay away from sexual impurity, but also from stuffing our faces with unhealthy foods? Ouch.

Bible Verse of Day

-Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body- 1 Cor. 6:19-20

IT REALLY WORKS!

See Yourself Slimmer creator Fiona Moreton came up with the idea after her weight rocketed during her twenties.Going from nine to twelve stone, her own battle against bulge inspired her to help other women."In my twenties the weight really started to pile on," says Fiona, 36.

"I was incredibly unhappy and comfort ate a lot."

Like many women, Fiona tried endless diets, but always hit rock bottom when she fell off the wagon. Even her wedding wasn’t enough to keep the pounds off permanently."I met my husband in my late twenties and although I got down to ten and a half stone in 2000, I started piling on the pounds again after the wedding.

By 2002 I was over 12 stone.
"I was playing around on some photo software one day and managed to make a photo of me look slimmer."It helped me so much to be able to see what I could look like."

Fiona cut out naughty snacks and made healthier choices, like switching white bread for wholemeal and eating more fruit and veg.She kept her photo stuck to the fridge as a reminder of how great she would look. "The weight slowly came off over a period of a year and a half, it dawned on me just how much the slimmer photo had helped.

"After months of planning I launched See Yourself Slimmer in May 2005 and just as importantly I have remained at my ideal weight of nine stone!"

Eat to Lose

The Prevention Reshape Your Body plan incorporates easy food strategies you can follow for life. "Women succeed at weight loss when they get a handle on their portions and eat in a balanced way," says nutritionist Lisa Young, PhD, RD, who dished out the dietary advice for our program. Her three key tips:

Eat early.
Have breakfast, even if it's simply oatmeal or a hard-boiled egg. It jump-starts your metabolism and prevents late-day bingeing. Studies have found that dieters are most successful when they start their day with a meal.

Get a "hand-le" on portions.
"Most of us eat too much—period. To lose weight, you have to eat proper portions," says Young. Use your hand to measure.
Food How to measure
Meat, fish, poultry 3 ounces = palm of hand
Mixed nuts 1/4 cup = 1 layer on palm
Cereal/popcorn 1 cup = 2 cupped hands
Cooked pasta 1/2 cup = 1 rounded handful
Cheese 1 ounce = 1 thumb
Butter/oil 1/2 teaspoon = 1 fingertip

5 Simple Changes for Succes

Nutritionist Susan Burke weighs in on five simple changes you can make. Doing these can lead to weight loss without really trying.
Photobucket
5. Jilt the juice: Although juice has more nutrition than soda, it's got the identical amount of calories per glass. Unless you're trying to gain weight, eat your fruit instead of drinking it. Eliminate one glass of juice per day and earn 150 calories.

4. Omit the oil: Although olive oil is a better choice than mayonnaise or creamy salad dressings, all are very similar in terms of calories. Instead of adding ¼ cup (4 tablespoons) of olive oil to your tossed salad, mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil with ¼ cup of balsamic vinegar and whisk in fresh or dried herbs like rosemary, basil and thyme and a dash each of salt and pepper. Eliminate 2 tablespoons of added olive oil and earn 240 calories.

3. Minus the mayo: Log on to any of the major fast-food franchises that have interactive Web sites (Burger King, McDonald's, Wendy's, etc.) and see what happens when you add and subtract mayonnaise. For example, on BK's website, a grilled chicken sandwich automatically comes slathered with mayo. Just "click" to leave it off and presto, see the calories reduce. For every tablespoon of mayonnaise you eliminate on your sandwich, earn 110 calories.

2. Boost the fiber: Make an effort to eat raw, crunchy vegetables, for a smart and filling snack, and to increase your intake of vegetables. You really can't eat too much of the crunchy stuff! Crunchy veggies are so full of fiber and water that a full cup of green beans, for example, has less than 40 calories. Snack on raw carrots, celery, radishes, mushrooms, spinach and broccoli. If you like, lightly steam by cooking for a few minutes, covered, in the microwave and then sprinkle with just a bit of butter granules (zero calories) or serve with tomato salsa. Eat as much as you like of raw or slightly steamed crunchy veggies; you don't have to "earn" these with increased activity.

1. Forget "Fried": The difference between a fried chicken breast and a broiled one can trip you up if you're trying to lose weight. One "original" recipe KFC chicken breast has 370 calories. A Chick-fil-A chargrilled chicken sandwich has only 270 calories, and Boston Market does it right... their quarter-rotisserie chicken (no skin) has only 250 calories. Forget the fried chicken and earn 120 calories by opting for skinless breast.

Grand total earned with the top five changes: 620 calories You've created a deficit of 620 calories without deprivation or even any exertion!

Since theoretically it takes approximately an excess of 3,500 calories to gain a pound, you'd have to create a deficit of the same amount to lose a pound. Just make permanent these modifications and lose weight naturally.

lisas crazy diet

heavy sunday/cooking for my daughtera

i dread sunday dinners at my family's house. This week is lasanga. (yikes!) I do enjoy the company but wish they would at least offer some type of low fat dinner. Its not like i can take another portion either, if i do its like "why are you watching what you eat you are not fat!" (coming from a 135 5'8 sister so i am thinking yeah right!). They have to realise i am not blessed with the good genes that they have and can't eat what ever i want and still wear a size 4. I do believe that is why (besides the stress from ex boyfriends and husband) I have been struggling with my weight all these years. Another hurdle is cooking for my daughter. When i go what do you want to eat? She is like pizza! so i am stuck making a whole pizza(sure its frozen but still) and looking at that pizza while she eats 2 slices and leaves the rest. Sure i only had 1 slice but i am always tempted to eat it all! How can we control these urges(with wasting food or making the family mad)? suggestions?

Regimens: Diet Supplement Seen as Risky for Some Users

Probiotics, the potentially beneficial bacteria and yeasts available as diet supplements and in some foods, may not be as helpful as widely believed. A new study suggests that under certain circumstances, they can be deadly.

Researchers studied 296 patients at risk for severe pancreatitis, a potentially lethal inflammation of the pancreas. Each was randomly assigned to receive either a commercially available probiotic or an identical-looking placebo. All patients were otherwise given conventional treatment.

There was no significant difference between the two groups in severity of illness at the start of the trial. But while 31 percent of the probiotics group required intensive care, only 24 percent of the placebo group needed it. Eighteen percent of those who took probiotics, but only 10 percent of the others, required surgical intervention. In the probiotics group 24 people died, a death rate more than twice that of those given the placebo.

Several smaller studies have associated probiotics with a reduction of infections. But this study, published online Thursday in The Lancet, was the largest randomized, double-blinded trial of its kind, and the authors found no other reason for the harmful effects.(Source: By NICHOLAS BAKALAR/the new york times)
